We realized while talking about Anna last night (as she recuperated from the pain of the multiple shots) that some of our attempts to stimulate Anna with mobiles and other toys may have been failing because they weren't the right kind of toys for her. For example, we had mounted a mobile on her crib that we thought looked appropriate for her because it was fluffy, had bright pastel colors, and played a lullaby. For weeks we have turned it on but she never looked at it and the music never seemed to calm her down.

So, today Maggie bought the god-awfulest looking thing, with crooked arms, stuffed animals hanging down from cones that have black and white geometric patterns and a music box that plays bach, beethoven and mozart. I installed it tonight, and put Anna in the crib to see how she'd react.

She immediately calmed down when I pushed the on button, watching the arms move around, and even turned her head towards the music box and smiled several times as it played. I think the lesson for us is that sometimes we have to try some different things, because it's easy to forget that what we like to look at and think a two-month old might like, may be completely the opposite of a what a two-month old finds appealing.

We have that mobile and Lila LOVES it. When it stops playing we know it because she does this grunt/scream thing as if to say, "Keep moving you little animals."

Now my question for you is this: Do you have the one with the cow and the donkey? What the hell is that third animal supposed to be? It looks like some kind of kangaroo bird.

After much thought, I think it's a kangaroo with bad green hair.
