Sleepy Time

During the course of the last two weeks we've been both cursed and blessed by a new sleep time routine for Anna. I had initially thought it was just a little blip on the sleep screen, but I'm pretty sure it's the new normal now.

No more naps.

It started out with a couple of nap skips, which occurs from time to time, but her night time sleep has started realigning itself also. Previously she was going to bed around 7:30 p.m. and waking up at 5:30 a.m. Maybe once a month she would sleep "late" and wake up around 6:00 a.m. and a handful of times a month she would get up "early" and wake up around 4:45 a.m. Yeah, you did read that right.

Now that she's not sleeping during the day anymore, she's sleeping in until 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. This is blowing our minds a bit and we are still walking around each morning in wonderment. Should we check on her? Is she okay? It's nearly 6:30 a.m... And then she wakes up groggy-eyed and walks in babbling about monkeys or drink cups and our day starts just as it would normally, just an hour later.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to cope with the loss of quiet naps during the day. It's not been easy, but it's also not been as hard as I thought it would be. For starters, since Abe arrived, I don't really get down time during the day anymore. It seems like someone is always up, it's just a matter of whether it's Abe or Anna. Maybe it's because we've had such a hard time getting Abe on his nap schedule or maybe it's because I just never had things timed quite right, but I haven't had real downtime for a long while. Now it's just official.

Anna is actually spending quite a bit of the regular nap time hour in her room, playing with her dolls or trains and reading books. Now her room is completely DESTROYED after about 30 minutes or so, but my entire house is in a constant state of destroyed or being destroyed, so it doesn't really change my life that dramatically. The part I fear is that she won't even want to stay in her room too much longer. I'm not looking forward to that AT ALL.

But staying in bed until 6:30 a.m. or so? That's been delightful. And so I'm choosing to focus on that. Our soon-to-be three year-old has her own internal clock and I've got to respect it.

Remind me of that when I'm pulling my hair out in a month.

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one with an early bird. Except, when Lila dropped her nap, she didn't sleep any later. Boo. But YEAH for you. That hour really does make a difference, doesn't it?

Sounds like you are hanging in there, but why does the change always have to be a mixed blessing? Why can't they just give you good on top of good. I never get that. Oh, well, I hope we can give you some downtime here in NYC! Looking forward to seeing you soon(ish).
