The Answer Is...

A headboard.

Yep, Mike and I made Anna's headboard (finally) this weekend. And, seriously, it's about time. We've been talking about this thing for months. But since it typically takes me years to get any type of design decision made, I have been dragging my feet on this also. I love, love, love to look at design web sites, but then I start to dig into something like Anna's room and I just sorta get overwhelmed.

It's not that I don't know where I want to go with it, it's just that we always have such a limited budget and I get frustrated by how expensive everything is and then I decide to hold off and, well, it's been a year now and I'm just now starting to pull together a loook for her room.

But, now for your viewing pleasure, I introduce... Anna's headboard.

Ta Da!!!

What do you think? I love it. After I got over my fear of the designer fabric section of Jo-Ann's, I started bringing home fabric samples. Once I hit on a couple of them, I got super excited. Using my super Jo-Ann coupon (40% off), I ordered this Annie Selke fabric and then one for the pillow (below).

We looked up a web tutorial on youtube and just went for it. I think we both were psyched that we could build something cool and custom but for far less than a designer headboard. The reality though is that this was a lot of work and I don't know that it was so much cheaper. I'm guessing this cost about $100 because we didn't have some of the supplies like batting and foam and craft adhesive spray. But if you had all that stuff already, it would be far less.

Poor Mike had to really work to get it to attach to the frame. Next time (ha!) we'll do a flush mount system. If I go this direction with Abe's room (not sure though), it will be far easier to do a second time.

She likes it now, but midway through she started saying I really want a pink headboard. Um... sorry, kid. This die's been cast.

I saw how Little Green Notebook used mirrors above her girls' beds in their room and I thought it was so cute. A few months ago I found this one for about $10 at an antique store and snapped it up. The fabric used for the pillow is pretty cute, but it I just couldn't get a good picture of it on the bed. Unfortunately, I think it looks a little busy next to the headboard so it may just live forever as a floor pillow. That's okay, too. I told Anna maybe we'd look at a small pink pillow for her bed to help break things up a bit.

My next dilemma is what to do with this wall now...

Any advice? I realize I need to show you the rest of the room in order to get your true thoughts, but Mike's gotta put up one of the pictures above her dresser before I snap the rest of the room.

But don't let that stop you! Any ideas are welcome.

It looks awesome! I am impressed. That's a project that'a bit past my skill level for sure. And did she get a whole new bed, too?

I LOVE it! That fabric is amazing and it really does look like you guys bought that headboard! I am impressed. Seriously though, I'd want that headboard in MY room...and I'm a bit older than Anna.

okay, looking at that wall, here are a couple of ideas:

-free floating shelf and/or book rail. this would allow Anna to store some favorite dolls or stuffed animals there, or put some books up that she can grab and read in bed. only downside is: would you constantly be straightening these items, or looking at a disheveled mess?

-some kind of stenciling or wall decals? like birds flying up, or a vine crawling up kind of diagonally?

-an array of some smaller pieces of artwork. b/c i'm assuming something large enough to fill the whole space would be too expensive unless you do it yourself. which I guess you could..did you see the napoleon dynamite that designmom put on her son's wall? pretty cool. not that i'm suggesting you go with napoleon dynamite. : )

I just wouldn't put anything up that you think she'd knock down with her feet, etc.

That is awesome! Good job!! Love the fabric choice, too. And I like that mirror...I've been seeing a lot of similar ones, usually bigger, but that one seems perfect for a little girl's room. If I didn't already own way too many mirrors, I would want one myself!

I totally understand your lack of motivation in getting things started and finished. I have so many ideas floating through my head for my apartment, but can not get it together!
