First Day of First Grade

She did it. Anna survived her first day of first grade.
After a hearty breakfast of Nutella croissants (her request), yogurt, and bananas, Anna dressed herself, brushed teeth and hair, and managed to squeeze in a few chapters of reading.

I pulled out the same first day sign I used last year and forced her into some pictures. My kids don't really love having their picture taken so when I get at least one cute picture, I try to remember to count myself lucky. Lately, Abe has taken to turning around so I can only get his backside.

We walked Anna and her ridiculous amount of school supplies down the street. It's always funny to see the march of parents on the first day, our sidewalks filled with parents and siblings. It almost feels crowded!

My neighbor organized a block photo at the end of our street. We have a TON of kids on our street and I love the idea of doing this every year. It will be fun to look back on these pictures.

Don't ask me why Anna looks like a frozen statue. We couldn't get her to smile for anything.

I am pleased to report she did not cry at drop off. But she looked so completely shell shocked that I was afraid it was only a matter of time. When I picked her up she said she did miss me and cried a little bit, but the teacher didn't mention it to me (I asked how she did) so I'm guessing it wasn't any major meltdown.

When we asked her what she did today she said they learned their daily schedule. What's on their schedule we asked. She couldn't remember. But her lunch box came home mostly empty so I know she focused on her food. That's pretty major because I was envisioning Anna day dreaming and not eating a bite. I was very pleased to see a serious dent in the food.

Tomorrow will be another day and I'm hoping it goes well. Say your prayers tonight for all those kids who will awaken to their new reality tomorrow. Yes, children, this happens every day :-)  In fact, my neighbor tells a funny story that their daughter started first grade and after a few weeks they were talking about her teacher and class. She really liked school a lot, but she had one request -- could they put her in half day first grade next time?

Hope everyone's first day went well...

Yay! Could your neighborhood be any cuter, cooler, or perfect? Love it!
