You Gain Some, You Lose Some
So we had another doctors appt on Monday, which was short but very interesting. First, during our last appointment (at 9 weeks), I had gained 4 lbs in 2 weeks. Now that may not sound like a lot in the grand scheme of pregnancy, but all those books tell you that you're not supposed to gain more than 2-3 lbs during the entire - and I had gained it in 2 weeks! So, of course, I had this panic that I was about to have the fattest, most grotesquely swollen pregnancy in the history of mankind. Maybe it sounds like an overreaction, but, hey, it's a lot of weight to gain in 2 weeks.
This time, I was prepared for her to tell me that I'd gained a total of 6-8 lbs. Particularly because I'm starting to get a little tummy (like I've eaten a lot of pasta, as my friend Ann characterized it). But, lo and behold, I had not gained any weight - in fact, I lost the 4 lbs. Weird, huh? I guess I was retaining water or something when I got weighed last. So I've essentially gained nothing during the first trimester, which is my justification for stopping at McDonald's this evening for dinner!
We also got to listen to the heartbeat, which we'd heard during our previous appointment, but the experience was completely different this time. At 9 weeks, the doc really had to search for the heartbeat, pushing and prodding on my belly. But, this time it was instant. We heard it the second she touched the doppler thing to my belly. In fact, we were sitting there listening when a sort of static came across. The doctor said that it was the baby flipping around in there. Flipping? We didn't even know a baby could flip at this point, but, flip it does. Mike particularly loved hearing this because it support is theory that we're having a baby ninja.
Last week, I told everyone at my office. A couple of people knew it already but it came as quite a surprise to most of my co-workers. Unlike most pr offices, I actually work with mostly guys. PR is definitely a female industry, but it just so happens that the group I work in is filled with a lot of males with campaign backgrounds. So it was funny to watch their faces because they were all sort of speechless and didn't quite know what to say other than, "wow".
Although one of my co-workers had a really cool comment. He asked me if we were going to find out the sex, which everyone asks, and I explained that we were still debating but leaning towards not finding out. Matt said, yeah, I guess it's kinda like a Christmas present from God. Do you open it early or just wait til Christmas? I like that.
