Funny Girl

Lately Anna has started to really enjoy being "funny." This can take various forms, but often goes like this...

Mike: Anna, do you have milk in your cup?
Anna: Maybe... (pause while she conjurs up the "funniest" thing she can) Maybe I have giraffe in my cup. (laughs hilariously)
Mike: A giraffe? How did a giraffe get in there?
Anna: Maybe I have couch in my cup... laughs... Maybe I have blanket in my cup... Maybe, maybe I have Mama in my cup.

You get the drift. It can actually go on for 30 minutes or so, as long as you will listen to her. She also has developed a fascination with making up her own words. They pop out constantly and then she laughs at herself because she thinks she's the funniest thing on earth.

Maggie: Anna, do you want raisins or crackers?
Anna: I want gocka gocka...
Maggie: Gocka, gocka... what does that mean?
Anna: It means bockty bockty... (laughs hilariously)
Maggie: Um... so, is that a yes or a no on the raisins?
Anna: Bockty Bockty... (laughs again) Wait - Mama, I want RAISINS!!

Her dialogue is so wondrous to me. Where does she come up with this creativity? It's like a constant flow of words and imagination. Every sentence has some wildly imaginative element to it - a word, an idea, a random song or sound. And everything she touches becomes a character. This weekend Mike overheard Anna talking to her plate, softly saying, "Hello, fork. This is little green bean..." and I've heard her several times whisper to her food. When asked what they are discussing, she'll tell me the food items are her children. Speaking of, Anna's very into being "little mommy." This all started with a book my mom gave her called, you guessed it - Little Mommy. The plot is quite simple. Little mommy has three baby doll children and she bathes them, takes them on walks, washes behind their ears and then at the end of the day makes them spinach and blueberry stew for supper. Despite the chauvinistic overtones, you can see why it would appeal to Anna. It's kinda like our set up at home and Anna would love nothing more than to be executive in charge of everything.

Recently Anna put on my scarf and started calling herself mommy, telling her farm animals they would be having spicy stew for dinner. For the record, I rarely feed our farm animals spicy stew. They can't really tolerate much spice at all actually.

Anna is also enjoying turning everything into a car or a boat lately. I found her in a basket the other day (see below), just sitting there, staring off into the distance. I'm pretty sure she had originally climbed in, hoping she could "drive" it and then realized it was a little too small to play in comfortably. The scene reminded me of a quote my Uncle Dennis would recite when my cousins and I were little and he'd catch us zoning off. I think it's originally Mark Twain. He'd look at us and say, Sometimes I sits and thinks... and sometimes I just sits.

I suspect she is just sitting.
