Christmas BakingOur dear friends Pamela and Cindy and their boys came out a couple of weeks ago for a little holiday baking. It was so much fun! We busted out the sugar cookie dough and enough sprinkles to choke a mule and let the kids have at it. Thankfully, between the three adults we were able to manage four toddlers and a baby... but any other ratio could have spelled defeat. You can imagine the whirlwind of activity when everyone gets together. Anna was practically beside herself with excitement... Harper and Byron are coming? HOORAY!!!

Pamela had the genius idea to just squash the dough flat with the parchment paper rather than rolling it out with flour. Giving those children a bowl full of flower would have been chaos. They all had fun trying to use the cookie cutters. Cindy actually owns christmas cookie cutters (
she's such a good mom), but I had to scrape up some shape cutters from the playdough kits. Perhaps they weren't designed to be used for christmas cookies, but a star is a star is a star in my book.

It was so great to see everyone. We couldn't believe how much everyone had grown and changed. Cindy is seriously a foot taller. Kidding. But Harper and Byron really did look so much older, I mean like little boys now. Waylon, little brother of Byron, was a total bruiser, running around chasing after the big kids. He's such a delight. Always full of big smiles. Every time I look at him I remember when Byron was just that age and it reminds how fleeting this age is... ah, nostalgia.

The little dishes of frosting proved to be too much temptation. I caught Anna more than once trying to stick the toddler knife full of icing into her mouth rather than on the cookie. Everytime I'd correct her, she'd give me this look as if to say, what? you GAVE me a BOWL of icing... Yes, I did my child and you proved that you could pack it away when I wasn't looking. The kids' faces and fingers were coated with red and green icing, I think Anna even had sprinkles hanging off her face.

In the end, we had a couple of plates of beautifully decorated cookies. The dining room was a mess, but the cookies were delish. I think that's how it's supposed to be. Pamela and Cindy completely helped me clean up the mess (did I mention they're the sweetest people on earth?) and then we made some coffee and sat and talked for awhile during the kids' naps. Of all the Christmas presents we will receive this year I know that time spent with good friends will be the biggest and best gift. I have been so grateful for the friendship of these two ladies and the amazing bond that their children and Anna have formed during the last couple of years. What a wonderful Christmas gift to share the day with them.

Hope everyone is staying warm. I'll be posting more this week and filling you in our activities over the last week or two. Have a wonderful week!

Sounds so fun! I think I might try rolling out my dough w/ parchment paper next time...I hate using flour myself!
